There is a meaningful difference between someone who takes down garden trees and someone equipped to remove a twenty-metre gum leaning over a house. The tools overlap, the skills do not, and the consequences of the gap are severe enough that it is worth understanding before you start ringing around.
This article is about choosing well: what qualifications and cover actually matter, how large trees are taken down, when a crane is the right answer, and the specific things worth asking on a big job in West Auckland.
What counts as a large tree
There is no formal cut-off, but in practical terms a tree becomes a large-tree job somewhere around fifteen metres, or wherever individual sections get too heavy to handle by hand. At that point the work changes character.
Below that threshold, a competent crew with a chainsaw, ropes and a chipper can manage most situations. Above it, the weight of each piece means rigging has to be engineered rather than improvised — the ropes, blocks and anchor points all have to be rated for loads that will destroy fencing, roofing or a person if they get away.
Species matters as much as height. A twelve-metre macrocarpa or gum carries far more mass than a twelve-metre pittosporum, and dense hardwood sections are heavier than they look. Experienced crews estimate section weight before they cut; that estimate is the whole basis of the rigging plan.
The other threshold is what sits underneath. A large tree in an open paddock is a straightforward fell. The same tree over a roofline is a different trade entirely.
Qualifications that actually mean something
"Arborist" is not a protected title in the way "electrician" is, so anyone can use it. The things worth asking about are the specific competencies the work requires.
- Formal arboriculture qualifications. Recognised training in tree biology, assessment and safe work practice, rather than years of experience alone.
- Chainsaw and tree-felling units. Specific competency in felling and sectional dismantling, not just general chainsaw use.
- Rope access and aerial rescue. Working at height in a canopy, and — critically — being able to get an injured climber down. Any crew putting someone up a tree should have a rescue plan and the training to execute it.
- Rigging competence. Understanding load, leverage and anchor selection well enough to calculate rather than estimate.
- Machinery tickets. Current certification for elevated work platforms, and appropriate licensing for any crane involvement.
- Utility clearance training. Required for work near power lines, which on many large-tree jobs is unavoidable.
Insurance, and why the number matters
Public liability cover is the thing standing between you and the repair bill if a section goes through your roof or your neighbour’s conservatory. On a large tree job, ask for the amount and be prepared to see the certificate — a contractor who works at this scale will produce it without hesitation.
The level of cover should be proportionate to what is at risk. Adequate for a suburban garden may be plainly inadequate for a tree overhanging two houses and a power line.
Check the currency of the policy, not just its existence. Certificates have expiry dates and it is not rude to look at one.
The other side of it is that a contractor without proper cover has an incentive to take risks that a properly insured one does not, because their downside is bankruptcy rather than a claim. Cheap quotes from uninsured operators are cheap for a reason, and the saving evaporates the first time something goes wrong.
How large trees actually come down
There are three broad approaches, and which one applies depends almost entirely on what surrounds the tree.
Straight felling drops the tree in one piece. It is quick and cheap, but it needs a genuine drop zone twice the tree’s height in the intended direction, plus escape routes. On lifestyle blocks and cleared sites it is often the sensible option; on a suburban section it almost never is.
Sectional dismantling is the standard suburban method. A climber works down the tree, cutting manageable pieces and lowering each one on ropes through a rigging point. It is slower, considerably more skilled, and it is what allows a large tree to be removed from above a house without touching it.
Crane-assisted removal lifts sections straight up and over whatever is in the way. The hourly cost of the crane looks alarming, but on the right job it converts two days of rigging into a half day of lifting and frequently comes out cheaper overall. It also removes a great deal of risk, because sections never travel over the thing you are trying to protect.
A good contractor will explain which method they have priced and why. If they cannot, that is informative.
It is also worth understanding that the method drives the timeline as much as the price. A crane lift needs the crane booked, the set-up position confirmed and often traffic management arranged, so it cannot usually happen next week. Sectional dismantling can generally be scheduled sooner but occupies the site for longer. If you are working to a settlement date or a build programme, ask about lead time as well as cost.
Power lines and the utility question
Large trees near lines are a specialist situation. There are minimum approach distances that untrained workers must not breach, and the consequences of contact range from a network outage to a fatality.
Depending on the proximity, the job may need an approved operator, a shutdown coordinated with the network company, or in some cases the utility’s own crews handling the section nearest the lines. None of that happens on short notice, so it needs identifying at the quoting stage.
Ask directly whether the contractor is approved to work near lines and how they intend to handle the sections closest to them. An answer along the lines of "we will be careful" is not a plan.
The same caution applies to service lines running into the house — power, phone and fibre are easy to overlook in a canopy, and they are cheaper to identify beforehand than to reconnect afterwards.
Access on West Auckland sections
Out west, access frequently determines the method more than the tree does. A crane needs somewhere to set up with a clear lift path — often the road, which brings traffic management into the picture. A chipper truck needs to get within reach or the material comes out by hand.
Steep bank sections in Titirangi, Laingholm and the Waitākere foothills routinely rule out machinery entirely, which means a bigger crew, more hours and a rigging plan that moves material uphill rather than down. Long shared right-of-ways create the same problem for different reasons.
Ground conditions add another layer. Western clay after rain will not support the plant that would drive across the same lawn in summer, and ground protection matting is an extra rather than an assumption.
This is where local experience earns its keep. A contractor who works these suburbs weekly will read the constraints from the driveway and price accordingly, rather than discovering them on the morning and issuing a variation.
Neighbours are part of the access picture too. On a large tree the safest rigging point, or the only viable drop zone, is sometimes over the fence. That is a conversation to have well before the day, and one most neighbours are reasonable about when they are asked rather than told. A contractor who raises it at the quote stage is thinking properly about the job.
Questions to ask on a large-tree job
A short list that will tell you most of what you need to know.
- What method are you using and why? Felling, sectional dismantling or crane — and what drove the choice.
- How many crew, and who is climbing? Large trees are not a one-person job, and the climber’s experience is the critical variable.
- What is your public liability cover? Amount and current certificate.
- What is your aerial rescue plan? A question that separates trained crews from confident ones very quickly.
- Is this tree protected? On a mature tree out west, more likely than people assume — and the liability is yours.
- How are variations handled? Internal decay is common in large old trees and can change the method mid-job.
- Can I see similar work you have done? Photographs of comparable removals are easy for an experienced crew to produce.
Getting a large tree assessed
Start with an assessment rather than a price. On a big tree the first question is whether removal is necessary at all — a crown reduction or a structural prune sometimes resolves the concern and costs a fraction as much, and a tree that has stood for eighty years is worth a second opinion before it comes down.
Where removal is the answer, the assessment produces a method, a written itemised quote and a realistic timeframe, including whether council consent is likely to be needed and what that would involve.
